When my son was in elementary school, his teacher requested that I help him to learn the first fifty dolch words. Excuse me? Did you say, D-O-L- C-H?
Being my first child to enter the school system, I had no idea what that meant and quite frankly, I was not too keen on the idea of memorizing words as a means of learning how to read. But, we do the same with math flash cards, right?
Learning these words can give your child the confidence he or she needs to pick up a book on their own and just start reading a level 1 story. The bottom line is that learning these 'Dolch' words creates a great foundation for beginner reading.
So who came up with this Dolch sight word list? It was a fellow named Edward Dolch, of course. He published this list of 220 non-noun words compiled from children's books and called them Dolch words.
This list consists of words which if memorized, will expedite the reading process. Why? well, these words cannot be phonetically pronounced, so learning them by sight, removes an immediate barrier for the young reader. Dolch words also are aptly referred to as 'sight words.' There also is a 95 nouns only word list.
Most students are encouranged to recognize all 220 dolch words and the 95 nouns by the end of 1st grade. However, this site provides you with all 220 Dolch Words broken down by grade level as originally structured.
I hope you find our site a helpful resource and most importantly, happy reading with your little budding reader! With a simple google search, you will find plenty of dolch resources and dolch tools out there. Many are much more exciting than just our dolch words list, but include dolch flash cards, dolch books, dolch games. When you perform your search also try searching on sight words as well as Dolch.
